Why Am I Gay?

When 15-year-old Juno Dawson found out he was gay, it sent him into a tailspin. He felt wrong, naughty and broken. He didn’t want to be gay and tried to hide it from family and friends. But he knew the truth was somewhere inside. Now he shares it all in this frank and funny book that answers all the questions young people might have about growing up LGBT. Featuring real stories from across the gender and sexual spectrums, this is a smart, inclusive non-fiction read with the message that however you identify, and whomever you love, you are exceptional, and you matter.

When a gay cis man becomes a Catholic priest in 1991, the church finds itself at a crossroads, trying to reconcile its teachings on homosexuality with the gifts that gay men offer as ministers of God’s word. This book is an indictment of a church that would rather lose the talents of priests and clerics (and even married ones) who are openly gay than allow them to serve with integrity as fully realized human beings.

Author Juno Dawson has been a sexual health and wellness teacher for seven years and was approached by her publisher to write this book. She consulted experts who came to different conclusions about what age is appropriate for the content, but all agreed that it was important for students to have access to this information. School district officials in Iowa City created a review process to address the issue, which included students who served on a materials review committee.
