If you’re a fan of Good Morning America then you already know it’s one of the most diverse shows on television. From news anchors to music artists, GMA is home to a variety of LGBTQ+ celebrities. And it’s only getting more inclusive as the show continues to expand its lineup of hosts and correspondents.
This past weekend, out Cuban-American journalist Gio Benitez made his debut as the new co-anchor of Good Morning America’s weekend edition. He was welcomed with cheers and a montage that showcased his career progression. His promotion to the GMA weekend show has been hailed as an important step forward for gay representation on TV. And it’s no wonder because Benitez is an impressive and accomplished journalist.
He has reported on a variety of topics including transportation, the space race, and the Pulse nightclub shooting. His expertise and passion for journalism have earned him a spot on a top-rated news program.
In addition to being a great journalist, Benitez is also an active social media presence and a role model for young queer people and kids of color. He has been married to fitness influencer and Extra TV and Good Day New York reporter Tommy DiDario since 2016.
The show’s co-host Robin Roberts has also been an advocate for the LGBTQ community. This summer, she sparked controversy when she asked former Bachelor star Colton Underwood about his sexuality and if he was “ready to live his truth.” This led to Underwood publicly coming out as gay on GMA this week.
