The gay community has a diverse set of circumstances to deal with, including safe sex, coming out, body image and finding a safe date online. It also has a lot of stereotypes that it struggles to overcome. In addition to these, there are also issues about perceived and real masculinity and gender roles in the queer community. In this article we will look at some of the main types of gay men.
Gay men can be divided into a number of different sub-groups, these are known as ‘triblets’ and include twinks, bears and jocks. These are based on how a man dresses, what he does and the way in which he interacts with his friends. This does not mean that all gay men fit into these groups and there is a lot of overlap within the triblets themselves.
Another group is the so called “perfect body” gays. These are men who try to achieve a certain appearance and have an unhealthy relationship with food, exercise and beauty products. These men can sometimes be ostracised by their peer group because of this. This can lead to depression and anxiety.
Other gay men are open and out about their sexual orientation, they are not afraid to express themselves and may even be active in the LGBT community. They can have open or closed relationships with other gay men and they are usually more comfortable addressing issues of sex and gender. They are likely to have a more masculine physique and may engage in activities like sports or military training to demonstrate their machism.
