Is Elsa Gay?

Since Frozen first exploded into pop culture, fans have been eager to see the film's heroine queen Elsa find love. She's not given a suitor in the first movie, but that hasn't stopped hordes of queer and feminist fans from calling on Disney to give her a lesbian love interest in the upcoming sequel. Despite this, Frozen co-creator Idina Menzel recently made it clear that she has no intention of making Elsa openly gay in the film's follow-up.

During an appearance on SiriusXM's The Unwinding, Menzel was asked whether or not Elsa will find love in the Frozen 2 sequel. The actress's response was a resounding no. "It's not something that I think is going to happen in Frozen 2. Elsa has more than enough on her plate. I don't think she would be interested in a relationship," she explained.

Elsa has been interpreted by some as a queer character because she embodies many of the traits we associate with LGBTQ representation. She's a loner who isolates herself, she has strange powers that are difficult to control and she lashes out at those who try to tame her. It's also worth noting that the main song in Frozen, Let It Go, has become a sort of coming out anthem for queer people.

The Frozen sequel does introduce fans to a new character named Honeymaren, who has been shipped by some fans on Twitter as being Elsa's potential love interest. Honeymaren only appeared briefly in the first movie's trailer, so it's not like Disney has given fans any explicit clues that the character will be gay.
