How to Train Your Dragon 2 Features a Gay Character

How to Train Your Dragon’s Hiccup (voiced by Kit Harington) is a man who is queer. He fails to live up to the strict masculine standards of his Viking community, and by forming a bond with a ferocious dragon, he queers his world. It’s an important aspect of his character that has not been lost in the sequel, How to Train Your Dragon 2.

The sequel picks up five years after the first film and sees Hiccup and Toothless getting sucked into an epic battle to protect all new species of dragons. It also features a big reveal from one of the series’ more well-known characters. The Irish Independent reports that burly Viking Gobber the Belch (voiced by Craig Ferguson) comes out as gay in HTTYD2. The movie’s openly gay director Dean DeBlois confirmed the character’s sexuality to E!. The macho Viking is seen watching a couple bicker and mentions that’s why he never got married, adding “that and one other reason.”

It’s a small moment, but it makes Gobber stand out from the pack of cisheteropatriarchal mentor characters in other films. This is especially important when it comes to animated media, where gay characters are still a rarity. Hopefully this is just the beginning of more queer characters for the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, which could make the franchise a model for other studios like Dreamworks. That’s because other movies in the studio’s canon like Shrek, Megamind, and Kung Fu Panda focus on heteronormative narratives.
