How Many Overwatch Characters Are Gay?

Overwatch, the popular multiplayer first-person shooter that takes place in a fictional futuristic world, has a surprisingly diverse roster of playable characters (or heroes). The game is known for its inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters and even features a gay romance between two characters. However, it hasn’t been as proactive in revealing queer relationships between its heroes compared to other shooters like Destiny 2 and Apex Legends. That changed recently with Pharah and Baptiste being confirmed as gay in a new short story for Pride Month.

It wasn’t a huge surprise that Baptiste was revealed to be bisexual given the way he flirts with many of the other heroes in the game, but Pharah was still a bit of a shock. The new lore piece for the pair, entitled As You Are, shows them traveling together with cybernetic cowboy Cole Cassidy. When he asks Pharah if they are a couple, she replies that they’re just friends, but later reveals that she has a crush on him.

Although it’s not an in-game confirmation, the dialogue between Pharah and Baptiste is still a big step forward for the game’s inclusivity. It joins the aforementioned gay confirmation of Tracer from a 2016 comic, along with Soldier: 76’s girlfriend Emily, Vincent (Jack’s ex-boyfriend) from another short story, and hacker omnic Lynx Seventeen, who was revealed to be pansexual in a 2019 update for the character. Hopefully this is just the tip of the iceberg and that the rest of the cast will be revealed to be more inclusive in the future.
