The professional dancers on Dancing with the Stars are known for their impressive moves and entertaining personalities, but they’re also known for keeping much of their personal lives off-camera. Some pros have even found love and settled down, including Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd who recently welcomed a baby boy into their family. Other pros have found themselves in the spotlight for more than just their dancing skills, like cyclist Cody Rigsby who became a hit on the show with his cycling prowess and went on to do the Ellen DeGeneres Show and become a motivational speaker and author.
But one thing that DWTS hasn’t yet offered is a same-sex pairing for an actual celebrity. This year, however, the show’s producers seem to have finally heard what many fans have been clamoring for: a same-sex couple. The full parings for this season of DWTS were announced on Saturday and include an openly gay professional dancer with an openly gay celebrity partner. Bad Education actor Layton Williams is paired with professional dancer Nikita Kuzmin for this season’s only same-sex pair.
This will be a first for the American version of the show, but it has been done before on other international versions of the competition. For example, the Israeli version of DWTS has featured female same-sex couples in the past.
Earlier this week, former DWTS pro Anna Trebunskaya was asked on Instagram about Jenna Johnson and JoJo Siwa becoming the first female same-sex couple in DWTS history. She said she would be happy to dance with a same-sex partner and that it’s actually not uncommon in ballroom dancing.
